Abstract

TEarly reading skills are one of the fundamental skills that elementary school students need to master. However, based on preliminary observations, some second-grade students still struggle to recognize letters, distinguish between letters with similar shapes and sounds, spell, and read simple words. This study aims to develop the “Letter Wheel” and “Reading Board” learning media and to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of these media in improving the early reading skills of second-grade students. This study employs the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The research subjects were second-grade students at Fathonah MI Tarbiyatus Shibyan, with a sample size of 12 students. The data collection instruments used included observation, interviews, validation questionnaires, student response questionnaires, pre-tests and post-tests, and documentation. The validation results showed that the “Roda Huruf” and “Papan Baca” media received a feasibility rating of 81.25% from subject matter experts (rated “very good”) and 84.37% from media experts (rated “very good”), with an average validation percentage of 82.81%. Student response to the use of the media was rated at 91.6%, categorized as “very good.” The pilot test results showed an increase in students’ average reading ability from 70 on the pre-test to 85.8 on the post-test. The results of the paired-sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference in students’ reading ability before and after the use of the media. Thus, the “Roda Huruf” and “Papan Baca” media are deemed suitable and can be used as learning media to help improve the early reading skills of second-grade students.
